I had to register a new name. My old website will still be active for another month then it will automatically redirect to the new site.

Where you in Florence in 1991?

Saturday I received an email:

Dear Ms. Brooksby;

Just curious, but were you in Florence Italy in June of 91 and were you painting watercolors next to the Uffezi Gallery? Not sure, but I believe I may have purchased a painting from you. I was there during the International AIDS Conference with Jim (Lastname), who, if I have the right Brooksby, is your cousin. The watercolor below is the painting in question, but the signature doesn't match anything I've seen in your more recent work. If I'm all wet about this, I apologize for inconveniencing you.

Yes that is my watercolour, quite a collectors item.  That one I am 100% positive I painted on site from the Boboli garden.  Cool, thanks for emailing.  Can I put your message on my blog?  I'll remove all names.

Thank you Owen Weislow for sending this to me, and thank you for allowing me to post this on my blog.  But Jim Lastname is not my cousin, a great friend.

 I've often changed my signature.  Many of the early watercolors I painted in Florence are signed "Beliza" B for my last initial and Eliza for part of my middle name.  This one is one of the very first when I'd began painting and rode my Vespa into the Florentine hills with my easel strapped behind. 

I've always advocated artists using archival material.  Definitely worth if hearing from a happy client  a quarter of a century later. 

 

another stolen painting

Yes another painting has been stolen, this is the fourth and one of my all time favourites

Anyone see it please contact me.  It seems to have disappeared from Ivry before I moved ateliers ...

This painting has been shown in several galleries in France and in Belgium.
It is an oil on canvas size 80x80 cm.  The stretcherbars are 4cm thick and painting goes around the sides.  Dated on back 2009.  Signature on back "brooksby" and on front lower left.

A Beautiful Dedication to Me from Someone Worth Following

A week ago I had visitors in my atelier in Ivry.  What a lovely couple.

They fell in love with a painting and took it home.

Caroline posted on her blog the adventure she lived and I almost cried when I read her post. La Belle Americaine on Watzis Her blog is a great mix of vintage

She calls me "formidable and adorable and profondément touchante. "

I am touched by her kind words and really, like my head is ready to explode from her admiration.

You Made My Day

This is a photo sent from a client to show me where they hung the painting they bought.  What a nice surprise.  It looks great!

The open studio day was a smash! There were about 20 four year olds painting and having a ball. Last night the bed felt so nice and early too.  I'll post photos tomorrow.

Today the painting told me that it was finished.  Don't ask me how this happens.  Any creative person that listens to their creations knows what I'm talking about.  I don't know how to explain it.

Some paintings paint themselves, this one did.  It feels good to paint Paris again especially this time of year when the light in the sky is blue until after 10pm, the Blue hour.

This painting is signed "Figé" and was painted in 2007 as a color study for a large painting that is now part of the Gables Collection Villa Rosa in Dallas, Texas.  Figé was a pseudonym that I used the last years I lived in Florence.  It is pronounced fi-gay.  Unfortunately in France it is a terrbile name for an artist the way it is written it means "stuck."  So I dropped it and went back to Brooksby.

This was also from Patissier Bon on rue saint Jacques. The smell of cacao was divine.  We'll eat it tonight with friends from London.  It is chocolate mouse with pieces of pear filling and a pear cream inside.

The phone call

I had to get this done yesterday, oops we are running late.  The little daily paintings of Parisian gourmandises will have to wait.  I hope the daycare is open tomorrow with the massive transport strike they are calling for.
